I’m not going to lie, I am addicted to coffee. It’s very much a part of a smooth start to the day for me, and whilst I’m not one of those people you can’t talk to before I have my caffeine fix, it just doesn’t feel right without one. It’s ultimately my treat drink, where as others may choose a smoothie, or god forbid – a soft drink, getting a hearty cup of freshly brewed coffee is the ultimate treat for me.

watermeloncrush_coffeealternative_1To my utter dismay, when I went for my yearly check up and blood work, my doctor told me that the only thing that I had to worry about was my cortisol levels. To the point where adrenal fatigue could become an issue, if I didn’t do something about it, and quick.

The solution?

Easy, she says. Cut out caffeine, learn how to mediate.

I zoned out after the first sentence as I slowly felt my world come to a halt. No more coffee? Impossible. How? Why?

It’s taken me a good 2-3 months to accept that caffeine isn’t necessarily great for me, at least not during times of high stress. Whilst I am still mastering the skill of regular mediation, I am slowly but surely cutting down on my caffeine intake, and I can safely say that it’s made a big difference.

Now that that I’ve managed to somewhat crush my caffeine addiction, I guess the next step is something like like Chi Of Life health retreat as I’ve heard they take on a scientific approach to their health and wellbeing rehabilitation programs (so it’s much more than daily “ommmms”), and actually complete a Life Blood Analysis as part of the program. Cool.

In the meantime, consider your own stimulant intake and take the time to rethink your routines. We get stuck into them for a reason – they are easy, and you mostly feel productive and energized. But sometimes a shift in the things we find the hardest to change can be the best for us.

As I couldn’t completely give up my morning ritual, I have taken to this caffeine free alternative in the morning, which not only fits my new sans stimulant regime, but it also packed full of anti-inflammatory factors, plus tastes amazing.
